Who We Are

Niagara Children’s Centre maintains an accessible, heated, salt-water pool.  Our aquatic services provide opportunities to enhance our physiotherapy, occupational therapy and recreation therapy services for children by providing an additional environment that enables children to further develop functional skills. We also offer open swim programs for children (and their families) who may not be able to participate in community based pool programs due to their condition.

Our aquatic services may involve individual or group intervention in the pool with a physiotherapist, occupational therapist or recreation therapist as well as programs that are supervised by a certified lifeguard.

Current Therapeutic Pool Programs offered at Niagara Children’s Centre are:

Sensory Swim
Water n' Weights
Physical Swim
Fitness Endurance Swim
Swim & Activity

Open Teen Swim
Open Family Swim
Open Preschool Swim

Frequently Asked Questions About Pool Programs

How do I register?

Call Jaymieson O'Neill at ext 127 to register for any of our open swim programs. You will be asked to fill out a registration form.

If you have any concerns that your child is not medically safe to swim then you should always check with your physician before you commence any swimming program. In specific circumstances we may request physician approval for your child to participate in a pool program.

What should my child wear in the pool?

If your child is not yet toilet-trained then they must wear a swim diaper.  Approved products include Gabby’s swim diapers or disposable swim diapers that are used only once.  Gabby Pants are re-usable and are available for purchase from Niagara Children’s Centre Therapy Store at the Reception area.

Standard disposable diapers are not allowed in the Niagara Children’s Centre pool.

Why are my child’s swim times cancelled sometimes?

There are two answers to this question:

  • Our staff closely follows the provincial standards for pool foulings.  If there is a pool fouling our pool will be closed for up to 23 hours.
  • Our pool can only be opened if we have a lifeguard present.  If a lifeguard can’t come in due to illness then our pool may be closed for the day.

We will do our best to contact you any time the pool is closed unexpectedly.  In order for us to do so, please ensure that we have a current primary and alternative contact number where you can be reached any time of the day.

Do I have to stay in the building while my child is in a pool program?

It is expected that a caregiver will remain on deck or in the pool depending on which program your child is enrolled in.
