Social Work

Who We Are

Social Workers (SWs) are health care professionals who are trained to support children and families to cope with the impact of illness, disability and complex health needs.  At Niagara Children’s Centre, social workers have specialized university education and must participate in continued professional learning and skills development.   The role of the Social Workers at Niagara Children’s Centre is to provide information and support regarding services relevant to the child and family.

Social Workers can help with:

  •  Parent/caregiver  support regarding child’s condition and development
  • Education and support groups for children, siblings, parents, grandparents and other caregivers
  • Information and  coordination of referrals to community services
  • Support for various transitions in a child’s life
  • Case coordination and advocacy
  • Financial assistance and benefits

Social Work is a regulated health care profession in Ontario.

At Niagara Children’s Centre Social Workers are available as needed, on a consult basis for children and families involved with other services:

  • Infant and preschool services
  • School aged services, including the Niagara Children’s Centre School
  • Medical Clinics

Groups offered at the Centre may include

Sibling Group: For brothers and sisters who have a sibling with special needs to meet others who understand what they may be feeling or going through.

Grandparent Group: An informal support group for grandparents who are helping to raise their special needs grandchild.

Parent Support Group: An opportunity to meet with other families who have a child with special needs, share coping strategies, discuss challenges and offer support to each other.

Transition Group: A group offered to students leaving the Centre School to help with the transition process to their community school. The group offers the students an opportunity to share their feelings about leaving and celebrate their achievements.

Social Skills Group: A group offered to Niagara Children’s Centre school students aimed at assisting with feeling identification and appropriate expression of emotions.

Group Education:  Be sure to check the Events section for up coming education and workshop sessions.
