Start of Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) Awareness Month

Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy Awareness Month is about working with families, clinicians, researchers, and partners, to spread awareness about neonatal and childhood HIE. For starters, HIE is a type of brain dysfunction that happens when the brain doesn't receive enough oxygen or blood flow for some time. It may develop during pregnancy, labor, and delivery. As a result, some children experience mild to moderate effects, from disability to developmental delay, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, or cognitive impairment. It occurs in 2-3 per 1,000 live births. HIE Awareness Month aims to improve the quality of life for children and families impacted.
