Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) Awareness Day
Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy Awareness Day occurs on April 4th, during HIE Awareness Month, which is about working with families, clinicians, researchers, and partners, to spread awareness about neonatal and childhood HIE. For starters, HIE is a type of brain dysfunction that happens when the brain doesn't receive enough oxygen or blood flow for some time. It may develop during pregnancy, labor, and delivery. As a result, some children experience mild to moderate effects, from disability to developmental delay, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, or cognitive impairment. It occurs in 2-3 per 1,000 live births. HIE Awareness Day aims to improve the quality of life for children and families impacted.
