Increase Commenting and Decrease Questions

Practicing comments instead of questions can help reduce the pressure on your child. Too many questions can make them feel stressed and might even lead to them saying or doing less. For children who are late talkers, answering questions can be tough. They are still learning how to use language, and questions can sometimes feel overwhelming. We often ask questions because we want to keep the conversation going. However, asking too many questions can stop the flow of conversation. If your child doesn’t know the answer, they may not respond at all. Even if they do know the answer, they might feel they have nothing new to add (like just saying "blue" again).
